Hunting and Fishing Reports

Feburary 8th, 2012
Fishing:
Salmon River: The river most days has slush, but on warmer days it clears up by afternoon. There is not much shore ice, and from Challis to Salmon the river usually is clear except for a few places. A few fish are being picked up around Ellis and down river. There are some fish being caught towards Clayton and Stanley also.  Float fishing with jigs is working well now, spoons and bait is an option also.  Dark colored nymphs will be the answer for fly fishermen, along with muddler minnows- these will also get bites from whitefish.
Mosquito Flats Reservoir.  Done for the year.
Bayhorse Lakes:  Should be frozen over now, and rumor has it that springs in the lakes make the ice unsafe.
Mackay Reservoir. -  Kokanee are being caught, and seem to be pretty good size.  The best jig is a pink rat finky tipped with a spike or half a meal worm.
Big Lost River - Upper Big Lost and Tribs try prince nymphs, copper johns or hares ear nymph. Lower Big Lost try  Parachute Adams(18-22), Baetis (18-22). Midges,Brassies/Red Brassies,Red Copper Johns,Zebra Midges(All 18 and smaller) and small nymphs.
Mountain Lakes- Not much to report, but should be fishing pretty good.
Hunting:
Wolf hunting runs through the end of March, and chukar hunting goes until January 31st.
Find the elk and you have a good chance of finding some wolves.
